It was heartening recently to hear that one of my ‘human’ osteopathy clients had been signposted to osteopathy by her GP. Things have certainly moved on from the early days of osteopathy back in 1874 when Missouri USA resident, Andrew Taylor Still – known as the ‘father of osteopathy’ – had become disillusioned with conventional medical care and his own treatment system.
Today, Osteopathy is a primary health care profession that specialises in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, aiming to restore normal function to the whole body, including the circulatory and neurological systems through mobilisation and manipulation of the musculoskeletal system.
This working together of GP and Osteopath makes perfect sense to me and maximises the available resources in the whole system for the benefit of the patient.
And the story so far is that my client has been for an initial consultation and assessment and it is likely that normal service will be resumed soon!
